The Origins of a Legend

Born in the Bronx, New York, Jerry B. Long Jr., better known as Kokane, was raised in Pomona, California. Music was in his DNA—his father, Jerry B. Long Sr., was a legendary Motown writer and composer responsible for classics like Just My Imagination and Papa Was a Rolling Stone. Growing up, Kokane spent countless hours in the studio with his father, absorbing the sounds of funk, soul, and R&B.

During his school years, Kokane excelled in talent shows and drama, developing a strong stage presence. Despite facing hardships in his environment, he remained focused on music, eventually becoming a pivotal figure in the West Coast rap and G-Funk movement.

A Career Built on Legacy

Kokane’s music career took off in 1989 when he signed with Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records. His cousin, Cold 187um of Above the Law, gave him the name “Kokane” to represent his highly addictive sound. His contributions to N.W.A.’s Appetite for Destruction and Eazy-E’s It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa solidified his reputation as a top-tier artist.

In 1991, he released his debut album, Addictive Hip Hop Muzick, featuring the single Nickel Slick Nigga from the Deep Cover soundtrack. His sophomore album, Funk Upon a Rhyme (1994), revolutionized G-Funk, blending soulful singing, rap, and funk-infused production. This album remains a collector’s item today.

After leaving Ruthless Records following Eazy-E’s passing, Kokane continued making waves, collaborating on Dr. Dre’s 2001, Snoop Dogg’s The Last Meal, and Tha Eastsidaz albums. His unique sound became so in demand that artists worldwide sought his legendary vocals.

Unmatched Accomplishments

With over 20 solo albums, Kokane is the most featured artist in hip-hop history. His collaborations include Tupac, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Xzibit, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, George Clinton, and Bootsy Collins, among many others.

His music has been featured in movies (Training Day, Menace II Society, Malibu’s Most Wanted) and video games (Grand Theft Auto, True Crime). Even after decades in the industry, Kokane’s influence on music remains unparalleled.
